Ball State University is under the careful nose of the University Police K-9 unit. While on the midnight shift, officer Craig Hodson and his partner, Boyka patrol the campus.
Because he searches for drugs, Boyka is an important asset to the Ball State University Police Department Hodson, is a K-9 handler and patrol officer and has been working with his dog Boyka for about five years.
Hodson communicates with Boyka by speaking commands in Dutch.
Having a K-9 unit is not new for the Ball State University police department.
Before acquiring Boyka, the department had two other dogs, Nord and Amber. First Sergeant Rhonda Clark says the department has thought about getting another dog, for searching for bombs.
When they are not on their shift, Boyka goes home with Hodson.
“It’s just like he’s my dog, he just comes to work with me,” Hodson said.
On January 7, 2006 while chasing down a suspect, Boyka was stabbed and rushed to the veterinarian.
“I got the phone call at 2:30 in the morning,” Clark said. “They said that Officer Hodson was on his way to Anderson with Boyka and immediately I asked, ‘Is he okay?’ And they told me he was up and walking around and that he was able to finish his work. I was very relieved.”
Boyka received four stitches and has been allowed only minimal activity since he was stabbed.
He should be back to work in 10-14 days, Hodson said. |
