Sorry about the delay in the update everyone. If you have been desperately trying to get your weekly beat I am terribly sorry. My email is no doubt flooded with countless emails concerning my lack of music criticism. Again, I am very sorry. Now, to business:
I?m sorry to bring you all down but there is a bit of news in the music community that must be addressed. Pink Floyd?s Richard Wright passed away this Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 65. He will be missed by music fans the world over.
For you non-Floyd fans Wright was an original member who played keyboards, was a wizard in the studio, and on occasion a lead vocalist for the band. His sense of layering and space within music are responsible a large part of the early signature sound. His best known later contribution is his co-writing and vocal work on the epic track ?Us and Them.? Tensions between Roger Water, David Gilmour, and Wright led to Wright being ousted from the band before the recording of ?The Wall? album but he was later hired back to play keyboards during the tour of the same name. When Waters left the band Wright was brought back into the picture and played a major part in 2004?s ?The Division Bell.? He left behind his wife and three children.
On a more cheery note and the originally planned topic of my blog, the band "Bound Stems" has released an album titled "Appreciation Night" Which is fantastic if you are waiting for Modest Mouse to return to the glory days pre ?Good News?. Key Tracks are ?Western Biographic,? ?Refuse the Refuse? and ?Book of Baby Names.?
Another CD you might give a listen to while you are waiting for a different band to get it together is "The Kills" ?Midnight Boom.? The comparisons between this band and "The White Stripes" have been noted by many but just in case I?ll give you a brief rundown. Guy and a girl with stripped down sound. Large blues influence, gritty vocals, simple lyrics. The guitar in this band dominates. If you like the Stripes you?ll enjoy this band. If you don?t like the stripes, you?ll probably still enjoy this band, just trust me on this. Key tracks are ?Sour Cherry,? ?Last day of Magic? and ?U.R.A. Fever.?
If you like ?Bound Stems? check out these acts:
?Maritime? and ?Chin Up, Chin Up?- Both Bands are label mates with ?Bound Stems? and are enjoyable as long as your mood doesn?t change from the first listening.
If you like ?The Kills? check out these acts:
?British Sea Power? or ?The Raveonettes?- BSP has a thicker more orchestrated sound but somehow kept it low-fi and ?The Raveonettes? should give you the female vocals and gritty sound you?re looking for.
